WOOD ENGRAVING
Wood engraving is a relief printmaking process that uses the end grain of the wood. In this workshop, you will be provided with end-grain boxwood blocks and tools to create marks and patterns on the surface of the block. At the beginning of the workshop, we will draw our designs on paper before transferring them onto the block and carving the patterns and shapes using the tools provided. Once the blocks are carved, you will ink the surface with black printing ink and create prints on Japanese paper as well as scrap pieces of paper. This workshop is ideal for beginners and those with a little prior experience.
This workshop will show you how to:
Design and develop an image for printing
Safely use carving tools
Explore mark-making and texture
Ink and print your block
Print onto a paper
Create experimental compositions
Learn how to continue printing at home
