WOOD ENGRAVING
Wood engraving is a relief printmaking process using the end-grain of the wood. In this workshop you will be provided with end-grain boxwood blocks and tools to create your marks and patterns onto the surface of the block. At the beginning of the workshop we will draw our designs onto paper, then dent or score the block with your patterns and shapes using the tools provided. Once the blocks are carved, ink the surface using black printing ink and block print onto Japanese paper and also scrap pieces of paper. This workshop is ideal for beginners and for those with a little prior experience.
This workshop will show you how to:
Design and develop an image for printing
Safely use carving tools
Explore mark-making and texture
Ink and print your block
Print onto a paper
Create experimental compositions
Learn how to continue printing at home
