INDIGO

Indigo dyeing is a great technique for transforming old materials, clothing, objects, and paper. The colour is strongest on natural materials such as linen, cotton, and silk, allowing you to explore a wide range of blue shades and patterns during the dyeing process. Shibori is the Japanese term for resist dyeing fabric. In this workshop, you will experiment with a variety of shibori techniques to create patterned textiles, including stitching, twisting, folding, clamping, pole wrapping, pleating, binding, and scrunching. Each indigo-dyed sample will be unique, giving you the freedom to explore your own textile ideas and develop your personal creative style. This workshop is hands-on, with practical demonstrations and examples to encourage you think make independently.

This workshop will show you how to:

  • How to set up a dye bath and prepare fabric for dyeing

  • How to dye material

  • How to add pattern to your fabric through stitched resist, folding, clamping and wrapping techniques

  • To experiment with your own ideas and outcomes

  • How to dye small samples and one final piece
